The Golden Voice of the Great Southwest

Please join us for an evening dedicated to raising as much money
as possible to help defray the considerable medical expenses of
national treasure Utah Phillips.
He won’t be able to travel and perform again; congestive heart failure
is making it necessary for him to live very quietly at his home near
Nevada City. A few of Utah’s long-time friends and admirers perform an
evening of songs and stories honoring this national treasure. All
proceeds from tonight’s show go directly to Utah Phillips.

Two of the most acclaimed singers in traditional American music, Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin
possess an amazing ability to capture the essence of a song, providing
a masterful setting for their soulful harmonies with superb fiddle,
guitar, banjo, and mandolin playing. (In the words of Utah himself, “If
the great swirling mass of folk music has a solid persistent unwavering
center, that is who Kate and Jody are.”) They have recorded an entire
CD of Utah’s songs, Heart Songs: The Old Time Country Songs of Utah Phillips (Rounder).

Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum
showcase impressive vocal talents, backed by their fabulous fiddle,
mandolin, and guitar. Laurie’s songwriting and crystal-clear singing
have brought her a Grammy and two International Bluegrass Music
Association Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year. Tom adds his own
sparkling musicianship and wry humor, creating an irresistible mix.
Utah says: “Laurie Lewis’ songs combine passion and sheer craft in a
way you don’t hear very often. Whatever country music is supposed to
be, she’s at the center of it.”

With equal parts verve and finesse, soulful flatpicker Eric Thompson and fiery fiddler Suzy Thompson
plumb the depths of classic and country blues, as well as French blues
from Cajun country and terrific hillbilly ragtime fiddle pieces.

Larry Hanks
applies his amazing bass vocals, guitar, and Jew’s harp to a unique
repertoire gathered during more than four decades on the folk music
scene, all rendered, as Utah said, “With fidelity, virtuosity, respect,
and a deep abiding love.”

Best known for his work with the eclectic Bay Area contradance bands, Hillbillies From Mars and Swing Farm, Ray Bierl is also a longtime folksinger with a impressively broad repertoire, some of which is displayed on his terrific new CD, Any Place I Hang My Hat.
Ray fiddles, strums, and sings his way through a repertoire of songs in
a variety of classic American styles, from rockabilly to old-time, from
bluegrass to Tin Pan Alley.

Faith Petric
was born on September 13, 1915 in a log cabin on a homestead near
Orofino, Idaho. Real pioneer stuff!! She remembers singing in her
preacher-father’s church at the age of three, hasn’t stopped singing
since and has no intention of doing so. She is that rare being of this
time, NOT a singer/songwriter. As Utah Philips says,”Faith doesn’t make
up songs, she harvests them … these outrageous and wonderful songs,
culled from a bevy of extraordinary minds, represent those wild,
satirical, quirky, offbeat, and endearing traits that characterize the
lady herself.”

Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1935, Bruce “Utah” Phillips
ran away from home at the age of 15 to gain an education on the road,
and has spent the past several decades telling the stories and singing
the songs of a lifetime spent exploring the lesser-known corners of
North America. As befits his checkered past, Utah holds a wide range of
honors: he’s a Grand Duke of Hoboes, as well as a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance.
This self-styled rapscallion, rabble-rouser, and individualist- not to
mention tall-tale-spinner extraordinaire- has made dozens of
recordings, running the gamut from The Long Memory, his 1997 album with Rosalie Sorrels, to his Grammy-nominated collaboration with rock diva Ani DiFranco, Fellow Workers (Righteous Babe).

Come help us celebrate Utah the most fitting way we can think of: with a good old rousing evening of great stories and music!

                Dear Companions,

I haven’t written for a long time, and some of you have been wondering what is up with us. We’ve been taking some much-needed time off to concentrate on other things. Todd Phillips has been hard at work in the recording studio, mixing up a storm. Craig has been home in North
Carolina, teaching banjo and being with his family, and Scott has, as
usual, been in the woods whenever possible.Tom and I had a fantastic Hawaiian tour, with time off to swim and snorkle in the ocean and lose my slippahs wading by a waterfall. We saw humpback whales, bottle-nose and spinnner dolphins, green sea turtles, and monk seals, to name a few of the larger species. Plus, we experienced the first 24 hours of a rainstorm that dumped 42 inches on the wet(!) side of the Big Island in 72 hours. It KNOWS how to rain there!

Now back home from Hawaii, I have been putting together a live recording of the Right Hands, which should be due out LATER THIS VERY MONTH! These guys I get to play music with are so great! Listening to all these live cuts makes me appreciate them all the more. I’ll keep you posted on the release date.

I finally got a little bit of time to work in my much-neglected garden. The ground is warming up, and the earth smells lovely. I planted spinach, lettuce, parsley, one little ol’ Early Girl tomato plant, a yellow bell pepper plant, Romano beans, and fava beans. Of course, I’ll be on the road when everything starts ripening, and once again much of the harvest will go to seed or the neighbors. But it looks good now!

Greetings, Earthlings!

It has been a long time since I’ve written, and it’s not because I don’t have anything to tell you about. It’s because Life is way too full and everything moves too fast, and as soon as one thing ends the next thing begins, and I can’t catch my breath. I need more time to sit and really think about where we’ve been and what we’ve seen and heard.

View of the Month Tom Rozum stands overlooking the Copper Canyon in Chihuahua, Mexico. Larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon, it is the home to the Tarahumara Indians, who moved into the canyon en masse in the 1720’s to escape Spanish persecution. The women make incredible baskets, mostly out of pine needles. The Tarahumara are known also for their fiddling and their fiddle-making, both of which are, ummm, rustic. Oh, yeah, and they run long distances, typically up to 100 miles. In This Issue The View from Here Tour Dates Ray Bierl CD Folk Alley Interview Craig and Scott at the Dixie Classic

Let’s see— where have we been lately? There’s the train trip to Mexico’s Copper Canyon. A thousand words aren’t enough to describe this. We’ll be posting some photos on our website soon. What an adventure that was! Tom Rozum and I had a great time playing music and swapping songs and stories with Dave Alvin, Terry Allen, Jo Harvey Allen, Butch Hancock, Michael Martin, and the guy who put it all together, Tom Russell. We wound through Mexico from Nogales up to the rim of the canyon, at 7,500 feet. The train track is an engineering marvel, doubling back on itself and negotiating some 189 tunnels as it climbs. It’s a swinging, swaying ride, and pretty fun trying to figure out how to walk the aisles and play our instruments.

As a result of playing with Terry Allen, my song, The Maple’s Lament (my “Song of the Month”) is going to be included in one of his art installations, Trees, at UC San Diego. I don’t know when it will be added, but Terry says sometime this next month. I attended UC San Diego for awhile, during a not-so-focused part of my young life, so it feels good to be returning this way.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass was, once again, an outstanding festival. It never ceases to amaze me that we here in the San Francisco Bay Area are treated to this absolutely FREE party every year. Crowds for the weekend were estimated at 500,000 happy people. Thank you, Warren Hellman! Check out where we’re playing this next month. If it’s close by, come on out and say hi. If it’s not, forward this newsletter on to someone who might enjoy our music. Plant a tree. Carpool to a concert.

In The Studio

Ray Bierl’s CD is out now! This year, I produced a recording for my longtime friend, former housemate and bandmate, Ray Bierl. He is a great singer, a fine fiddler and guitarist, and about the best storyteller in song you’ll ever hope to hear. I’ve always admired his choice of material. So I was thrilled when Ray approached me about producing his new CD, and somehow we managed to fit it all in in this very busy year. Please check it out. His music deserves to be heard, and I’m happy that I could help make it happen. Tom Waits has this to say: “No one knows how to weave you into a song quite like Ray Bierl. The music on this record is down home elegant. You can hear the highway in his voice. From road dust to Stardust and every town in between.”

I drove home from Los Angeles on Sunday, where I was producing a recording for Susie Glaze. It’s sounding great! More on that later. Escaped the Santa Anas just in time. We’re praying for rain in the southlands.

Folk Alley Interview
online now

About a month ago, I had the pleasure of sitting in conversation with Jim Blum of Folk Alley. His radio show is based in Kent, OH, but the program can be heard anywhere thanks to the internet. Visit Folk Alley to hear the interview and check out this great show.

photo: This is at the American River Music Festival in September, with Pete Wernick playing banjo. I was playing “Texas Bluebonnets.” Luckily, I haven’t figured out how to mic the fiddle while I hoop. It probably looks better than it sounds. Now, that’s showbiz!

Craig and Scott go to the Fair

YouTube clips
Every year, Craig and Scott play for ten days at the Dixie Classic Fair in North Carolina. I have always wondered what that might be like, and now I know. The tunes are crowd-pleasers, played beautifully by Craig Smith (banjo), Scott Huffman (guitar), Jeff Foxall (mandolin), and Robert Sprye (bass). The video quality is pretty rough, but it’s fun to look at, and it definitely captures the feel of the fair. Thanks to Dexter Goad for posting these clips!

Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter. We never sell, share or even loan our email list to anyone. Feel free to pass it on to anyone who you think might be interested in it.

Thanks also for supporting live music!

We hope to see you down the road. ~Laurie

Oh, the poor garden…

It nearly broke my heart to leave my tomatoes behind this last month. I came home to disappeared lettuce (I wonder what happened to it all), and lemons hanging off my little tree so thick that they look like Christmas ornaments.

The blackberries are hanging in thick clusters, and I keep imagining how a bear would like it back there right now. I can just see her, stripping the berries off the canes.

Multi-tasking in Canada

Here I am honing my newest skill, playing Chubby Wise’s kick-off to "Footprints in the Snow" while hula-hooping at the BC Bluegrass Week.

A Busy Month

I took this photo of Tom cooling off in Waterfall Creek, just above the confluence with the Middle Fork of the Salmon in Idaho last month. That trip already feels like it was last year sometime. It’s been an action-packed August, and it’s not even quite over. The Right Hands ventured into beautiful green steamy South Dakota, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. For a California girl, it was pretty exotic weather, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

The Sioux River Folk and the MBOTMA Festivals both include a lot of old-time music, which I loved. Since I got home, I’ve been watching a DVD of the southpaw Missouri fiddler, Cyril Stinnett, and trying to decide which tune to learn first.

Bluegrass at the Beach was a great time, and it gave Scott, Tom and me a chance to play music with Noam Pikelny, Mike Witcher, Mike Bub, Fletcher Bright and the legendary (and rightly so) Roland White. That Noam never stops playing the banjo, which is probably why he’s so darned good at it. The weather was perfect, though after being in the Midwest, it felt a little chilly. I missed the big outdoor steam unit.

I always try and get a window seat when flying, and on our recent flight from Minneapolis to Portland, OR, I was surprised and alarmed to see that much of Idaho appeared to be on fire. It has been a terribly dry year in that part of the country, and the small fires that we saw when we were there last month have grown into infernos. We met some firefighters up from New Mexico while we were in the Boise airport. I cannot imagine what their job must be like, and the strength and courage it must take to pit yourself against such an opponent. My heart goes out to all those doing this dangerous work. And, luckily, we managed to get out of the Midwest before the storms and flooding hit. We are narrowly missing the disasters this year, and are thankful for that. Maybe I spoke too soon. I just felt an earthquake!

Your Eyes is #4 on the Bluegrass Hit Parade!

I just opened the latest issue of Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine to find that our little silly song, “Your Eyes”, continues to climb the charts. I am gratified and surprised to see that it’s getting so much airplay (in the rarified atmosphere of bluegrass radio shows, which is admittedly a pretty tiny segment of the airwaves). A great big THANK YOU to all the radio programmers for continuing to spin our disc!

Nina Gerber Live ~
Good Music with Good People

I am pleased to announce that I am included on Nina Gerber’s new CD. It’s a compilation of live cuts from the Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival (aka KateFest). The song is "I’d Be Lost Without You," which we recorded at a workshop called "Backing up a Singer." I think that Nina had just been talking about the importance of not detracting from the singer’s presentation by playing too much or stealing the spotlight. Her beautiful solo made the audience clap over my vocal, so of course I fired her (no, not really!).

The CD has cuts from Jackson Browne, Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka, Terry Garthwaite, Greg Brown, Bruce Cockburn, Sarah Elizabeth Campbell, Solid Air, and Paul Kamm and Eleanor McDonald. I’m in most excellent company.

Speaking of Nina, we just played together at the grand opening celebration of the new Down Home Music on 4th Street in Berkeley last Sunday. What a boon for our town! If you’re in Berkeley, make sure you check them out. Their flagship store in El Cerrito has long been the best place to find roots music in the Greater Bay Area.

                        Dear Companions,

Our travels have been filled with beauty. In late May, I visited White Clay Creek Preserve, in the southeastern corner of Pennsylvania. What a gem of a place! I was ready to move there, and live out my days among those glorious hardwoods and songbirds that we don’t have out here in the West.

VoiceWorks, in Port Townsend, WA, was more fun than I expected, and I am one who pretty-much expects fun everywhere. It was held simultaneously with Slide and Steel Week, and it was a pleasure to sing and hang out with the staff of both programs. A highlight among many was meeting the man behind the spoon, Hannes Coetzee, of South Africa. I had included his video on our myspace page before I found out that we were actually going to get a chance to hear him in person. Wow! What a cool guy!

I hope that you had a most excellent Independence Day celebration. We spent it celebrating the 76th birthday of Arhoolie Records founder Chris Strachwitz, and listening to the beautiful conjunto singing of Los Centzontles (the Nahuatl word for mockingbirds), playing the blues with Barbara Dane, experiencing an amazing choro jam, listening to Marc and Anne Savoy and seconding Michael Doucet’s wild and sweet Cajun fiddle, and finally ending up with a few bluegrass songs among friends in the shank of the evening.

It’s fitting that Chris celeberates his birthday on the same day as Uncle Sam. For one thing, Chris’ life is a study in independence, and for another, this German immigrant has done as much
as any living person to preserve and promote American traditional music of all stripes.

In the garden, the tomatoes are going crazy. Spinach and parsley have gone to seed, and the lettuce is getting a little bitter. Romano beans are going well, and the blackberries are just coming in.

Plant a tree.

Our musical pals Tom and Patrick Sauber and Mark Graham were in town a couple of weeks ago, and I asked them to come up to Tilden Park with Tom Rozum and me to shoot a video. Patrick ran Tom’s minicam, a passer-by held the microphone, and we sang and played Val’s Cabin while the birds sang along in the trees. It was so pleasant out there, and of course a few hikers stopped to listen. One listener requested Hazel Dickens’ song, “You’ll Get no More From Me,” much to our delight. Ah, Berkeley!
Val’s Cabin

Also up on youtube is a vintage version of Laurie lewis and Grant Street singing Texas Bluebonnets. The video is from Merlefest, Wilkesboro, NC, in 1993, I think. The band is Laurie and Tom on twin fiddles, Craig Smith on banjo, Peter McLaughlin on guitar, and Cary Black on string bass.

I hope that this film can do something to start a real conversation about it. And that we can actually change things. I mean, why shouldn’t everyone in the United States get the same quality of health care that the citizens of Canada receive? Or Cuba, for that matter?

It has been a beautiful spring of wild weather. We fought snow over Siskiyou Summit (hey, that’d be a good band name!) a couple of weeks ago, and a couple of hours’ drive down the road from there it felt like early summer in the Trinity Alps. Then, back out on the north coast of California it was blustery and crisp like late fall.

Now, I am just home from North Carolina, and the weather there was amazing. The wildflowers were at their peak, and the new leaves on the oak, maple, hazel, and tulip poplar were breathtakingly green and tender-looking. Last week, Scott Huffman and I were out in the woods before dawn, watching the world awaken. We just don’t see sights like this in California!

Last weekend was MerleFest, in Wilkesboro, NC, and I heard too much great music with too many other people, and connected again with many friends. Highlights for me were the Infamous Stringdusters, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Alice Gerrard, the Lonesome Sisters, Crooked Still, Uncle Earl, and of course getting to play a set of music with Craig Smith, Scott Huffman, and Jeff Foxall.

Now back in the Bay Area, we have a whole new scenario to deal with, namely the closing of two freeways. Maybe a few people will rethink their commuting lifestyles. It’s going to be difficult for a long time around here. Time to get the bike out.

Take care,
Laurie

================================

Last April 21, we happily celebrated the birthday of fellow band mate for over a dozen years , Todd Phillips. Todd is a California native and a national bluegrass treasure, being an original member of recording bands that remain very important to our music: The David Grisman Quintet, The Tony Rice Unit, The Bluegrass Album Band, Psychograss, etc. We’re thrilled to have him on most of our own recordings.

Little did we know that on that same day (Aug 21) we would lose two colleagues that were also very important West Coast acoustic music figures…

Luthier John Sullivan, of Portland, OR lost his year-long battle with esophageal cancer. He was an excellent instrument maker, with a good eye for detail, always interested in working with players to make sure he could realize what they were looking for. Last Sunday there was a benefit concert at the Historic Wonder Ballroom in Portland. Tom Rozum, who owns a lovely Sullivan-made mandolin, took part in it.

In Tom’s words…
“With the sad news of his passing last weekend, the benefit turned into a tribute held in John’s memory, and what a tribute it was! For four hours, various bands took their turn playing their 15 minutes of music, each to honor John. Each act had at least one person playing their personal Sullivan instrument, and while watching the show, it became very clear how important John was to the Oregon music community. Meanwhile, on display downstairs were thirty or so of John’s guitars, mandolins and fiddles and a continuous loop of a 12-minute video documentary of John building a mandolin. The event ended with twenty five musicians, all brandishing Sullivans of some sort, playing Cherokee Shuffle. I for one, was blown away. Not only did those instruments do their part in the inspiration and making of great music, but they’ll do so long after we’re all gone. That’s quite a legacy for one man.”

Howard Larman, R.I.P.

On April 22, I received the following message from Ken Irwin:
“Howard Larman, the wonderful and knowledgable host of Folk Scene since 1970 passed away yesterday. Along with his lovely wife, Roz, Howard presented one of the best shows on the air programming a wide variety of folk music with multiple guests who performed on their show. Many bluegrass artists performed on their show over the years which brought folk music to the Los Angeles area and more recently to the world through the web. Howard was a gentle soul who loved music and the musicians who made it. This is a loss to all who knew him and to the folk and bluegrass communities.”

We have played on Folk Scene for Howard and Roz Larman many times over the last 20 or so years. Howard always made us feel at home and welcome, and we will miss his full-moon smiling face and easy conversation. We were looking forward ot seeing him this weekend. Our hearts go out to Roz.

Acoustic Guitar

Laurie is featured in the “Player Spotlight” in the latest issue of Acoustic Guitar Magazine. The article, written by Kenny Berkowitz, is about songcraft, and talks in some depth about the writing of the music to accompany Wendell Berry’s poem, “Burley Coulter’s Song for Kate Helen Branch.” It also details what instruments Laurie plays and what kind of strings she uses, just in case you’ve been wondering.
While we’re at it, here’s what AG recently had to say about The Golden West:

Since the mid-’70s, when she helped
found the all-female Good Ol’ Persons, fiddler Laurie Lewis has
gracefully straddled the line between trad bluegrass and
singer-songwriter folk. Born and bred in the Bay Area, Lewis plays a
brand of Northern California newgrass that favors earnest, thoughtful
songwriting over breakneck instrumentals and breathing room over
density. Alongside traditional material by John Hartford, Jimmy Martin,
Bill Monroe, and Jimmie Rodgers, The Golden West includes three of
Lewis’ latest songs. Covering her favorite themes of love, friendship,
and mortality, from the light-hearted “Your Eyes” to the yearning
“Burley Coulter’s Song for Kate Helen Branch” (with lyrics by the
agrarian poet/novelist Wendell Berry) and the mournful “A Hand to
Hold,” Lewis’ writing is as wise as ever, with a warm, generous sense
of uplift. As always, her fiddle playing is sweetly lyrical, her
singing smartly passionate, and her band-flatpicking Scott Huffman on
rock-solid rhythm and gently playful lead guitar, Todd Phillips on
upright bass, Tom Rozum on mandolin and mandola, and Craig Smith on
banjo, with Linda Ronstadt on harmony vocals-is beautifully matched,
trading quietly intricate solos in service of the song and the singer.

And, finally, Laurie is featured in the April issue of Fiddler Magazine in Paul Shelasky’s “Bluegrass Fiddling” column. pulling weeds in the garden. But.here it is! Please come visit us and
I have been having such a great time traveling and playing music with Tom, Craig, Scott and Todd. In these days of escalating everything everywhere, we are feeling very lucky to be doing what we love. We thank all of you who came out to see us over the last couple of months. It’d be lonesome out there without you!

I am curious what you long-time readers think of these new, spiffy-style newsletters. I am beginning to get more adept at putting them together, but I sort-of miss the ease of the simple email style of the past. Is it worth having all the links and photos? When we first started doing these, we got lots of positive responses, but maybe those of you who didn’t like it were just too polite to say otherwise. Let me know what you think.
